Exporting to DOCX, PDF, EPUB without losing anything

Narraya's export to DOCX, PDF and EPUB: full fidelity to typography, intact formatting, files ready for publishers, print and self-publishing.

Team Narraya

Exporting a novel from a writing tool has, historically, been a small disaster. Tables that jump, nested lists that lose indentation, highlights that become different colors, line-height that shifts from airy to claustrophobic. You spend half a day rebuilding the formatting in Word. It's a frustrating experience and, worse, it weakens the trust you can place in your own manuscript: if the form breaks on export, what will happen in print?

In Narraya this doesn't happen. Not by miracle, but by precise architectural choice.

A single source of truth

What you write in the editor is stored in a single structured format β€” TipTap JSON, the engine behind the editor. From that format, dedicated serializers generate the DOCX, the PDF, and the EPUB. There are no "successive conversions" at risk of losing information: each final format is a direct rendering of the same source. If in editor you have a two-level nested list, the nested list arrives on export. If you have a gold highlight, the gold highlight stays.

An export that betrays the text you wrote is a technical betrayal, not a detail of form.

Three formats, three uses

Format When to choose it Typical destination
DOCX Manuscript for editor, agent, proofreader Opening in Word / LibreOffice for collaborative revision
PDF Print draft, review reading, archiving Printing, tablet reading, "read-only" sharing
EPUB Digital publication, e-reader reading Kindle, Kobo, upload to Amazon KDP or other self-publishing platforms

From chapter to export in three clicks

  1. Open the book page.

From the library, enter the book to export. From here you can choose to export the whole book or a single chapter.

  2. Click "Export" and choose the format.

DOCX, PDF, or EPUB. You can set options like the cover (if uploaded), page numbering, inclusion or exclusion of draft chapters.

  3. Download the file.

Narraya generates the file in seconds and offers it for download. No queue, no email wait.

What actually arrives in the export

  • Tables with formatting intact.
  • Gold highlight preserved (in DOCX as coloured background, in PDF as overlay, in EPUB as CSS class).
  • Nested lists up to three levels deep.
  • Clickable links (DOCX and EPUB) or visible as text (PDF).
  • Inline code formatted with monospace font.
  • Configured line-height preserved consistently.
  • Cover on the first page (if uploaded).
  • Page numbering (PDF).
  • Index generated automatically from chapter titles.
Built for self-publishing

The EPUB file produced by Narraya complies with EPUB 3 standards, compatible with major e-readers and publishing platforms (Amazon KDP, Kobo Writing Life, Apple Books). You can upload it directly without intermediate conversion steps. Always run a rendering test on a real device before publication β€” for good practice, not because of technical concerns.

Who it's for

Those who submit manuscripts to publishers

DOCX is the standard format requested by publishing houses and literary agents. Narraya's file is clean, compatible, openable without adjustments.

Those who want to reread on paper

PDF laid out as a book (6x9 inches, A5, or customized) is perfect for printed rereading β€” the moment when you see the novel in a different form and discover problems invisible on screen.

Those who self-publish

For those choosing self-publishing, Narraya's EPUB is ready for upload to KDP or other platforms. No intermediate step, no repagination.

The detail that matters: the promise of fidelity

When you see your chapter in the editor and open it in DOCX, it should be the same chapter. Same structure, same typographic accents, same hierarchy of titles. Not a "translated" version that merely resembles. Because while writing, you make decisions of form: an italic on a word, an indented quotation, a blank line separating two moments. Those decisions matter only if they arrive intact to the final reader.

It's a technical responsibility we take seriously. Not as glamorous as a generative AI, but it's what concretely determines whether your novel comes out as you wrote it.

Want to see an export in action? The live demo lets you export a sample chapter in all three formats, so you can compare.
